Personal Standards

No, I'm not talking about washing your hands on a regular basis, or standing up to meet people, or using personal hygiene products (surely those are all a given? although attending a wargames convention might suggest otherwise) - I'm pontificating on the oft asked question on wargaming forums... Did commanders have personal standards? TL;DR answer 'no'. Here's a slightly less succinct answer. But first a note: Peachey and Prince wrote  the seminal 'ECW Flags and Colours 1: English Foot' in 1991, this was planned to be the first in a series of booklets.  Looking through the current Partizan catalogue would suggest that book 2 exists and covers the Scots, and book 3 the regiments of horse. However, books 2 and 3 are not the books planned by Peachey and Prince. Some of their notes and illustrations for the planned books appear in a number of other works, the most easily accessible are the Forlorn Hope Guides. Sir Alexander Fraser of Philorth's Firelocks

A little reorganisation of the storage boxes vacated some space for my Army of the Solemn League and Covenant. Here's the second of two new units. A return to painting after a very Scottish-centric focus for most of last year, sees a Covenanter commanded shot unit come to life: Sir Alexander Fraser of Philorth's Firelocks. Philforth' s  served in the Bishops' Wars and on the Preston campaign in the Second Civil War. Sir Alexander Fraser was born in 1604, the grandson of  Alexander Fraser of Philorth, founder of Fraserborough. Sir Alexander inherited his grandfather's estates in 1624, to the exclusion of his father. He was known as the 'younger of Philorth' until his father died in 1636/7. It is doubtful whether Sir Alexander was an enthusiastic Presbyterian, or whether  he had any strong objection to Episcopal government of the Church, but he seems, like many others, to sign the Solemn League and Covenant when it was  brought to Aberdeen by Montrose in 1638....

Winstanley

Recently picked up a copy of this on fleabay. Widely available from internet behemoths for a lot of money, this can be picked up for less than a tenner if you have patience from a certain on-line auction house. An eagle-eyed reader reports it is available from the BFI web shop for £9.99.  Winstanley was released in 1975, and "no" younglings your screen isn't broken, films and telly box were often black and white in those days. We had it hard back in the day... Armour used in the film was borrowed from the Royal Armouries collection; the V&A and the Museum of English Rural Life helped with the rest of the costumes, and advised on locations. Whilst the costumes and locations were top notch, the cast were mostly amateurs. The film tells the story of Gerrard Winstanley  and the Diggers attempting to create a community on St George's Hill, Cobham, Surrey. Coat Colours Part 1: Parliamentarian Regiments of Foot

When I first started my Civil War gaming project I relied upon the many ECW coat colour tables on wargaming websites. As my project has progressed, my library has got bigger, my research has gone back to primary sources rather than relying upon second and third hand sources; and I have noticed quite a few errors in these lists for wargamers. I have also noticed the same errors appearing in multiple lists.     As a result of continually seeing 'the London Trained Bands and their Auxiliaries wore red coats' (there is no evidence supporting this at all, the evidence, whilst not explicit suggests that the London Trained Bands wore civilian clothes - some of the Auxiliaries might have been issued with blue winter coats) I decided to write my own list.  So here it is. So You Want To Know About The New Model Army?

The second instalment in what could be a very one sided, short lived series. But first we need to talk about the term 'New Model Army'. 'Tis nought but a Victorian affectation (courtesy Thomas Carlyle in 1845). The New Model Army was not called that in the C17th, you know... when it actually existed. It was technically, just 'the army', but was described as 'the army, newly modelled' or the '' newly modelled' army' so as to distinguish it from Parliament's previous field army (the Earl of Essex's Army), and the fact that they had a new structure.  Now we can move on. Warlord Pike and Shotte Epic Battles: the infantry sprue

Firstly a big thank you to Warlord Games who sent me a sprue of their new Pike and Shotte Epic Battles infantry. (You can see how I got on with the cavalry sprue here. ) I will try and look at these figures from three different angles: the first impression of someone completely new to the period, the button counter’s standpoint, and then from a seasoned wargamer’s point of view. In all cases I'm looking at these through Wars of the Three Kingdoms spectacles. (Wars of the Three Kingdoms is a more accurate name for the conflicts that were fought in the British Isles in the mid seventeenth century. The English Civil War was just one of these conflicts.) The obligatory next to a ruler picture (the ruler is lined up with the soles of their footwear) The 'new to the period' view This one sprue provides enough figures for one unit (a Regiment of Foot or RoF). Coat Colours

This post now serves as a preface to my coat colours posts (links below), and provides some background information on who was issued clothing, what constituted a 'uniform', and hopefully dispels some of the Wargamer Facts™ that surround 'Civil War uniformology'. The fanciful Victorian imagery of the Wars has pretty much been dispelled* (Roundheads in striped sleeved shirts, Cavaliers in poncey big hats); in reality both sides were, very much of a muchness. There are some items of equipment and uniforms, still in existence, that give us a starting point. Our best primary source of evidence are contemporary eye witness accounts, from spies to flag designers, account books from great houses and military manuals. Whilst I do strive for accuracy, at the end of the day my armies are a pastiche, they aim to give a 'feel' rather than pleasing the 'button counters' that populate the darker corners of the wargaming community. Warlord Pike and Shotte Epic Battles: the cavalry sprue

As a follow up to my review of Warlord's Epic P&S foot sprue  here's my thoughts on the cavalry sprue that came with the latest (April) edition of Wargames Illustrated. April's WI: the Epic cover art reminds me of the Letraset style action picture scenes of the 1970s First off, let's have a look at the sprue as a whole. An 'interesting' choice of components for a 'cavalry' sprue, but I understand that the commercial need to 'have everything on just one sprue' dictates what is and what isn't on the sprue. I've already seen quite a few people asking which figures are which, on various forums and FB groups.  So here is a 'button counter's' view of the sprue. The un-identified figures are generic 'harquebusier type' cavalry. I note that there are two figures that look a bit more officer material than the others, and a cornet who could double up for either the dragoons or the regiments of horse.
