...the latest mini series on Noiser's Short History podcast covers the English Civil Wars. Part 1 of 2 has just been released and is a very good explanation of the causes of the Civil Wars. An excellent way to fill 50 minutes of commuting time.

No, I'm not talking about washing your hands on a regular basis, or standing up to meet people, or using personal hygiene products (surely those are all a given? although attending a wargames convention might suggest otherwise) - I'm pontificating on the oft asked question on wargaming forums... Did commanders have personal standards? TL;DR answer 'no'. Here's a slightly less succinct answer. But first a note: Peachey and Prince wrote  the seminal 'ECW Flags and Colours 1: English Foot' in 1991, this was planned to be the first in a series of booklets.  Looking through the current Partizan catalogue would suggest that book 2 exists and covers the Scots, and book 3 the regiments of horse. However, books 2 and 3 are not the books planned by Peachey and Prince. Photography Part Two: Museums

Regular readers of the ECW Travelogue will know that I often have to apologise for poor quality photographs taken in museums. Normally this would be down to operator error (i.e. my incompetence) but on these occasions it isn't: it is down to museums becoming light airy public spaces. Great for the building ambience and visitor experience, awful for taking pictures. But I may have found a solution (discovered at the Birmingham photography show, just like the Foldio studio). Just as my original photography post showcased a cheap, simple solution for taking photographs of miniatures; so this post will showcase a cheap, simple solution for eliminating light reflection in museums. In use at home on a glass cabinet door - even I draw the line at taking a picture of myself using this in public. It is called an Ultimate Lens Hood or ULH for short. Lord Spencer’s Regiment of Horse

Henry Spencer fought at Edgehill and was rewarded for his services (the £3000 he gave to the King was purely a coincidence) by being made 1st Earl of Sunderland (and in case you are wondering, yes he was a forebear of a certain Lady Diana). Lord Spencer's was part of the King's Oxford Army. Formed in 1643 they fought at Bristol, Cirencester (where they suffered very heavy losses, some sources suggest they were completely captured), and First Newbury where Lord Spencer was killed by a cannonball. The Regiment continued as Spencer's Regiment of Horse fighting at Lostwithiel, Second Newbury, Donnington, Langport, Torrington before surrendering at Truro in 1646. The Regiment was raised anew by Colonel Thomas Colepepper (who had previously been the Lieutenant Colonel of Spencer's, so presumably he became the Colonel on Spencer's death) in 1648 where they were involved in the events at Colchester. What Colours To Use?

The mental images we have of seventeenth century dress are invariably of a dashing cavalier, wearing extravagant clothing and an ostentatious feather in a broad-brimmed hat; or a dour Puritan dressed in black and white. A heavily stylised, but very enduring set of images created by the Victorians. But what was the reality? Some clothing from the time still exists, although this will, by the very nature of things, have belonged to rich owners. It has been suggested too, that due to interest in the civil wars, that these surviving garments have been fancydress-ified by the Victorians to achieve the romantic nature of dashing cavaliers and their ladies. Thanks to rising temperatures the C17th and C18th graveyard at Spitsbergen is giving up its inhabitants - whalers buried in their clothes. ECW Wargaming Research: Getting Started

An oft asked question on forums is "which is the best introductory book about the English Civil Wars?" The editorial team at KeepYourPowderDry working on the next thrilling post. (Actually a detail from the 1650 news sheet "The Ranters Ranting") The simple answer is: "there isn't one". This is usually followed by a slightly more helpful answer  - "Haythornthwaite".  Sadly, "Haythornthwaite" is almost as unhelpful an answer as "there isn't one". Nice pictures, but fairly dated and contains a number of errors (including some in the pictures) which he has repeated from earlier books and other authors. These errors have, in turn, been replicated by a number of figure sculptors, writers and websites. There's a reason it is so cheap on on-line auctions. Baggage Train (Again)

Yes, again. Baggage. Bit of a recurring theme here. For the benefit of new readers I keep getting tempted by shiny things and add to my baggage trains - all the while vowing that that is really is my final addition. Probably done this three or four times now. My baggage trains are now mahoosive. When I discovered that a relative was a captain in Holland's Regiment of Foot, well I had to represent them (and him). Which meant that the Royalists needed another regiment of foot. Which meant I needed to rebalance the armies as they were becoming very foot heavy. But this post is about baggage - I'm coming to that, be patient. So a really big sort out of the spares box was in order. I discovered that I had enough dead harquebusiers for my big cavalry expansion, and also enough dead musketeers for the few more regiments of foot. Lord Percy’s Regiment of Foot

Percy's were formed from detachments sent south by Newcastle in early 1643 as an escort to an ammunition convoy. Often stated as being attached to the artillery train they were a standard Regiment of Foot which served in Thomas Blagge's Oxford Brigade, Symonds recorded them as wearing white coats at the Aldbourne Chase muster. They fought at the Siege of Gloucester, First Newbury, occupied Newport Pagnell (oviously attracted to the good motorway connections), believed to have been at Cheriton, Cropredy Bridge, and Lostwithiel. At Lostwithiel Percy was dismissed from service*, Colonel William Murray taking over the command. Under Murray they fought at Second Newbury, Leicester and Naseby where the Regiment was almost entirely captured. Winstanley

Recently picked up a copy of this on fleabay. Widely available from internet behemoths for a lot of money, this can be picked up for less than a tenner if you have patience from a certain on-line auction house. An eagle-eyed reader reports it is available from the BFI web shop for £9.99.  Winstanley was released in 1975, and "no" younglings your screen isn't broken, films and telly box were often black and white in those days. We had it hard back in the day... Armour used in the film was borrowed from the Royal Armouries collection; the V&A and the Museum of English Rural Life helped with the rest of the costumes, and advised on locations. Whilst the costumes and locations were top notch, the cast were mostly amateurs. The film tells the story of Gerrard Winstanley  and the Diggers attempting to create a community on St George's Hill, Cobham, Surrey. Coat Colours Part 1: Parliamentarian Regiments of Foot

When I first started my Civil War gaming project I relied upon the many ECW coat colour tables on wargaming websites. As my project has progressed, my library has got bigger, my research has gone back to primary sources rather than relying upon second and third hand sources; and I have noticed quite a few errors in these lists for wargamers. I have also noticed the same errors appearing in multiple lists.     As a result of continually seeing 'the London Trained Bands and their Auxiliaries wore red coats' (there is no evidence supporting this at all, the evidence, whilst not explicit suggests that the London Trained Bands wore civilian clothes - some of the Auxiliaries might have been issued with blue winter coats) I decided to write my own list.  So here it is. Plague Physicians

Earlier this year Peter Pig released a pack of plague physicians. Here's my take on them, teamed up with a 'dead cart' from PP's Wars of the Roses range. The contemporary evidence for this plague physician appearance comes from France and Germany; sadly, there is absolutely no evidence that these outfit were worn by doctors during plague outbreaks in the UK. Despite an absence of scientific knowledge about plague transmission, these outfits would have been very good at protecting the wearer. Were you taught at school that the plague was transmitted by rats, and their fleas? Recent research is strongly suggestive that that was not the case: human fleas and body lice being much more likely culprits.
